Ocean Race Class - PHRF (Performance Handicap Rating Formula)
Our racing area, Nantucket Sound, is blessed with steady sea breezes, interesting and challenging navigation, and was named by Sailing World Magazine, as one of the top ten best places to sail in the US.
The Hyannis Yacht Club Ocean Race Committee conducts an entire Summer Series of racing events to suit all skill levels.
Weekly on Wednesday evenings at 1800, we conduct our Beer Can Series consisting of two classes, racing (with spinnakers) and cruising (without spinnakers). A spirit of camaraderie and fun is essential to our collective enjoyment of the races. Crew volunteers of all skill levels are welcome to sail with us. Our Skippers have fostered a mentoring program to assist all new boats that join in. Trophies are awarded weekly, monthly and for fun activities that our crews participate in.
In addition, we offer a series of 4 weekend long-distance races in Nantucket Sound, one in each month (June, July, August and September). Each event has something different, two begin and end in Hyannis and two have overnight stays, one to Martha’s Vineyard and one to Nantucket. Trophies are awarded for each event plus the Wilbur Cup Trophy for the entire series.
Please join us, if you are an experienced racer or a sailor that would like to try something new. We promise that you will have fun! Contact HYC Ocean Race Co-Chairs Roy Catignani (rbccapecod@aol.com) or Ryan Scudder (captscudd@gmail.com) with any questions.
Crew Members: We also welcome those who would like to ‘crew’ aboard the boats in our fleet. If this interests you, please contact our Crew Coordinator, Skipper Rick Egan at (rbegan@verizon.net).
